On one of my painting trips to Katoomba I was lucky enough to have use of a studio in the main street. The upstairs room overlooks Beverly Place, the home of Katoomba’s Street Art Walk. I am enchanted by the buildings of Katoomba with their faded art deco facades, worn interiors reflecting stories from a distant time.
From my studio vantage point I could observe the comings and goings down in the street below as well as the ever changing mood of the mountains. On this occasion the landscape before me was lit by an afternoon sun and set against the backdrop of a brooding sky to the east.
Streetscapes fascinate me as a record of time but also it’s the juxtaposition of shapes, manmade, geometric, organic that draw me to them. Nowhere more so than in the Upper Mountains where we are reminded at regular intervals that we are guests of mother nature, not the other way around!
