The gorgeous and elusive Leafy Seadragon is fixed in favourite memories of mine since a child. I used to pick up the dried bodies of these gorgeous creatures after storms and big surf along Austinmer and Thirroul beaches with my grandmother. Because of this, it was ultra-special when my son and I were able to find them when diving.
These creatures are often thought to be a type of seahorse but are actually more closely related to the pipefish. This species is native to the Australian Southern Coast. As they are relatively poor swimmers, they rely on their perfect leafy camouflage appearance and the protection of the algae, seagrass, weed beds and reefs of the south coast. Unfortunately, due to human activities, they are seriously at risk of being lost.
